The Chickpea's Southern Sista

I needed to juice up my cookbook's appetizer section (which is currently lacking in content), and I'd been wondering how black-eyed peas would taste in hummus. The answer? Oh my god, awesome! As evidenced by this Black Eyed Pea Garlic Hummus:

It may not look super hot in my shabby Tupperware, but I spooned it in and drizzled it with olive oil and paprika before remembering that I needed to shoot it first. Oh well. I promise it tasted amazing on toasted whole wheat pita triangles.

The recipe is pretty basic. I was going to get all fancy and add stuff like sundried tomatoes or roasted red peppers, but I wanted to sample it plain before adding to it. I was so pleased with the result of the plain garlicky black-eyed pea hummus that I decided to leave it alone. Sometimes simple is better. And to be honest, I liked it better than any chickpea hummus I've ever made.

I served the hummus pita toasts with a large side salad of mixed greens, carrots, cucumbers, tomato, snow pea pods, roasted sunflower seeds, soy nuts, and vegan ranch dressing:

Great idea! Hummous is so good, and black eyed peas are great, so really - what's not to love?

Sounds good. I'll definitely try that when your cookbook comes out. I haven't cooked much with black-eyed peas, I think it's because I never know what to make with them. (Any suggestions?)

Black-eyed pea hummus is genius! I'm a carnivore, but I think I'm going to have to try this.

That looks amazing with your semi-mezza plate! Bet it would be awesome on bagels too... my favorite hummus delivery system.
YUM!

What a clever version of hummus! Black-eyes peas are delicious, hummus is delicious, and garlic is delicious, so your Black Eyed Pea Garlic Hummus must be triple delicious!

Yummmm! I can't wait until this one's up for testing!

I made the chocolate gravy this morning. SO GOOD. Also, thank you for giving me an excuse to eat chocolate for breakfast! The Brit asked what I was making, and I was all like: "Chocolate... I HAVE to eat it - it's a tester!" lol

PS - would you be interested in some sourdough starter? bazu (http://wherestherevolution.blogspot.com) sent me some of hers (dried), and now that I've got it going again, it's going super-strong! Just let me know, I'll bring it to the next food swap.

I love that! I have sort of learned that you can use any bean in place of chickpeas and its all hummus. I make an awesome raw hummus replacing the chickpea/bean altogether and use 1 raw zucchini and a 1/2 of an avocado. Its amazing!

i have yet to make my own hummus but i think i want to try something like that first :) sounds tasty

I am a huge hummus fan and am so thankful you suggested using black eyed peas! I am definitely going to change it up. This is a recipe I can make right now too because I can sit down and do it. I know I keep apologizing for not being a good tester, but I promise after this "Damn Baby" gets here it will be a lot easier for me to be in the kitchen. Baby and I both miss making your recipes though and hope I will still have a chance to participate soon!

I am so glad that I discovered black eyed beans when I went vegan. I love their creamy texture and can imagine how great these must be in hummus!

my husband is the hummus king! and rarely does his hummus actually have chickpeas in it...which i suppose would mean that it isn't actually hummus, but that's still what we call it. he makes it with black beans or great northern beans or pinto beans, whatever we have on hand & it is always fabulous! yours looks amazing...i don't like black eyed peas, but i have found i don't mind them like that!
